     John Butler was born before 28 April 1728 in New London, Connecticut Colony.² He was baptized on 28 April 1728 in New London, Connecticut Colony.² He was the son of Lieutenant Walter Butler and Deborah Ely.² John Butler married Catherine Brat in 1752.¹ John Butler died on 12 May 1796 in Niagra, Upper Canada, Colony of Canada, now Ontario.¹
     John Butler and Catherine Brat had five children.¹ He commanded a regiment that became known as Butler's Rangers. In June 1778, he led his rangers and 300 Indians against Wyoming (now Wilkes-Barre) Pennsylvania. He defeated Zabulon Butler, took Forty Fort, and was unable to prevent his Indian allies from perpetrating the Wyoming Valley Massacre. Later the same year, he was in command when the Cherry Valley Massacre occurred.¹
